Hygiene Etiquette

Body

  • Please come to class with your hair and body clean! In BJJ, we are in extremely close contact with each other's bodies, and it is flat out rude to show up to train dirty, sweaty or stinky! We have body wipes available at the front counter if needed before class.

  • Please always wear deodorant and reapply as necessary.

  • Cover all skin scratches/cuts with band-aids and/or athletic tape.

  • DO NOT roll if you have an active skin infection like Ringworm, Staph, MRSA, Impetigo, herpes, etc!

Nails

  • No regular nail polish on fingers or toes. Only GEL or SHELAC allowed. The regular polish will stain the mats and leave permanent marks.

  • Clip fingernails and toenails before class. If you forget, you will be asked to use the gym's nail clippers and clip your nails before class. You may not attend class with fake or long nails of any kind. It increases the risk of scratches which can lead to infections. Don't be a bad partner...CUT YOUR NAILS

Gi (uniform)

  • For your trial class a Gi will be loaned to you, so you may arrive to class in workout wear (leggings, rashguard, tightfitting T-shirt, shorts or workout pants with NO zippers, buttons, snaps or pockets).

  • Please always come to class with a clean gi and remember to wash your gi and workout wear as soon as you get home from training.

  • Please keep your Gi away from smoke, pets and other offensive odors.

Feet

  • Always wear shoes/sandals in the restroom-THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT

  • No socks are allowed on the mats, just your bare feet.

  • Never walk with bare feet while off the mat-always have shoes/sandals on.

  • Wipe bare feet on foot cleaning pads located around the edges of the mats. Wipe them on the wet side then follow up with wiping them on the dry side than bow on the mat.

Face/Hair

  • Remove any jewelry before class (earrings, bracelet, necklace, rings etc) If it can't be removed, then it needs to be covered with athletic tape.

  • Remove any metal hair pins/clips as they can hurt you and your partners and puncture the mats. (No bobby pins, plastic/metal headbands or clips, and no hair ties with a metal clasp.

  • Please don't wear make-up to class as it can stain Gi's.

Class Etiquette

Be on time

Please come to class on time. If you are late, please wait at the edge of the mat to be bowed on by the coach.

Bow on/off the mat

We will show you how to properly bow on/off the mat.

Belt hierarchy

Upper belts have the right of way during sparring.
